How to Support Venezuela After the Earthquakes

Amigos, creo que en este punto todos sabéis ya que Venezuela ha sido víctima de dos terribles terremotos que han provocado una catástrofe sin precedentes en el país. Venezuela no es un país que haya sufrido pocas cosas en las últimas décadas, pero esta, definitivamente es la peor, no solo por lo devastador de los terremotos sino por lo mal preparado que está para afrontar una emergencia de esta magnitud.

Durante las primeras horas del desastre probablemente lo habréis visto: muchos voluntarios civiles se abocaron a ayudar a sus vecinos, equipados con poco más que su deseo de ayudar a salvar vidas. Cero militares, cero gobierno central. En un país en el que la presencia militar es visible en el día a día, justo después de la tragedia brillaron por su ausencia. Por esto dependemos MUCHO de las ayudas internacionales.

Muchos países ya han enviado sus equipos de rescate, desde los topos mexicanos hasta la UME de España, pasando por la UE, UK, EEUU, Chile, Brasil, El Salvador, Colombia (mil gracias a todos), y su actuación es clave en estas horas. Pero se necesita más. Los heridos y desplazados necesitarán ayuda ahora y en los próximos meses. Y dadas las difíciles condiciones de actuación en el país, lo mejor es contribuir con organizaciones que ya tengan una infraestructura montada en el terreno. Si estáis en lugares con gran presencia de inmigrantes venezolanos (como Miami, NYC, Madrid, Barcelona, Bogotá), estoy segura de que estarán organizando colectas en las que podéis participar.

Friends, I think by now you all know that Venezuela has been hit by two terrible earthquakes that have caused an unprecedented catastrophe in the country. Venezuela is no stranger to hardship in recent decades, but this is definitely the worst—not only because of the devastating nature of the earthquakes, but also because of how ill-prepared the country is to deal with an emergency of this magnitude.

In the first few hours of the disaster, you’ve probably seen it: many civilian volunteers rushed to help their neighbors, equipped with little more than their desire to help save lives. No military, no central government. In a country where the military presence is visible in everyday life, they were conspicuous by their absence immediately after the tragedy. That’s why we rely SO MUCH on international aid.

Many countries have already sent their rescue teams—from the Mexican “Moles” to Spain’s UME, as well as teams from the EU, the UK, the U.S., Chile, Brazil, El Salvador, and Colombia—and their efforts are crucial at this time. But more is needed. The injured and displaced will need help now and in the coming months. And given the difficult conditions for providing aid in the country, the best thing to do is to contribute to organizations that already have an established infrastructure on the ground. And if you’re in areas with a large Venezuelan immigrant population (such as Florida, NYC, Madrid, Barcelona, Bogotá, México D.F.), I’m sure they’ll be organizing fundraisers you can participate in.
