3. Monasterio de San Juan de Duero

Visit the beautiful ruins of this 12th-century monastery on the banks of the Duero. Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer used this landscape as inspiration for his famous legend El Monte de las Ánimas, and there’s a wonderful statue of the writer nearby.

While you’re here, visit the Templar cemetery and the area associated with the fictional setting of Bécquer’s tale. This is where Soria starts to feel a little less like a city and a little more like a legend.

4. Ermita de San Saturio

Take a walk along the Duero, starting near the Iglesia de San Polo. After about 15 minutes, you’ll reach the hermitage of San Saturio, dramatically built into the rock above the river.

The walk itself is part of the experience: quiet paths, old trees, the Duero beside you, and plenty of history and legends along the way.

7. Festival de las Ánimas

Every autumn, Soria celebrates the Festival de las Ánimas, inspired by Bécquer’s work and the legends surrounding the city. The highlight comes on the night of October 31, when a nighttime procession brings El Monte de las Ánimasto life with nobles, Templars, fire, and plenty of theatrical drama.

Throughout the week, the city will host a variety of events connected to the poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and his legends, including performances, readings and storytelling.

Extras

Soria also has strong links with Antonio Machado, who lived and taught here. You can follow in his footsteps and visit the places and landscapes that inspired his poetry.
If you have time, venture outside the city to the beautifully preserved Castilian towns of Calatañazor and El Burgo de Osma, which make an excellent addition to a weekend in Soria.
