Madrid: Vermut con cosas

Desde que llegué a Madrid la tradición de tomar un aperitivo alrededor del mediodía me ha fascinado… y rescatado, porque aquí en España se come muy tarde. En los últimos años además se ha rescatado el vermut como protagonista de esta pausa rebelde a mitad de día, y hay muchos vermuts para probar y compartir mientras dejamos el tiempo pasar sin otra meta que disfrutar de un momento de ocio reclamado.

Existen en Madrid muchos sitios que definitivamente merecen ser conocidos por su vermut… pero también por otras virtudes, en este minimap (¿el primero del tema?) os mostraremos donde podéis disfrutar un vermut con algunas cosas más, desde las mejores gildas, buñuelos de bacalao, hamburguesas, hasta un soundtrack natural de garzas y las mejores historias de los “yayos” de Madrid.

Since I arrived in Madrid the tradition of having an aperitif around noon has fascinated me… and rescued me, food-wise, because here in Spain we eat very late. In recent years vermouth has also been rescued as the protagonist of this rebellious break in the middle of the day, and there are many vermouths to taste and share while we let the time pass with no other goal than to enjoy a moment of reclaimed leisure.

There are many places in Madrid that definitely deserve to be known for their vermouth… but also for other virtues, in this minimap (the first on this subject?) we will show you where you can enjoy a vermouth with some other things, from the best gildas, cod fritters, hamburgers, to a natural soundtrack of herons and the best stories of the “yayos” of Madrid.

1. La Violeta

2. Cafetería HD

Aquí se toma vermut con… ¡mis hamburguesas favoritas de Madrid! (Y si me apuran, también con el mejor pisco sour de Madrid, preguntad por Chema). La HD es un clásico de Chamberí, tanto por su decoración auténticamente vintage, sus hamburguesas, su gran barra y su banda sonora con exitazos de los 80s y los 90s. Perfecta para el vermut pre-almuerzo.

Here you drink vermouth with…. My favorite burgers in Madrid! (And if I dare, also with the best pisco sour in Madrid, ask for Chema). Cafetería HD is a classic in Chamberí, both for its authentic vintage decor, its burgers, its great bar and its soundtrack with hits from the 80s and 90s. Perfect for a pre-lunch vermouth.

3. Óscar Patanegra & CIA

Aquí se toma vermut con… ¡vistas al Rio Manzanares! Y con soundtrack de aves locales que van desde patos a garzas y gansos del Nilo, a lo largo del paseo tenéis carteles informativos. No son pocos los cafés a lo largo de Madrid Rio, pero sí son pocos los que están en esta área tranquila y tan cerquita del río. Aquí hay una buena carta para acompañar vuestro vermut y también, por la noche, hay conciertos en vivo.

Here you drink vermouth with…. views of the Manzanares River! And with a soundtrack of local birds ranging from ducks to herons and Nile geese, along the promenade you will find informative signs. There are not few cafes along Madrid Rio, but there are few in this quiet area so close to the river. Here there is a good menu to accompany your vermouth and there are also live concerts some nights.

4. Villa Verbena

Aquí se toma vermut con… la deliciosa comida de este sitio con garantía de Grupo Triciclo y The Hat Madrid, y vistas al lago de la Casa de Campo que es, ni más ni menos, que el parque urbano más grande de Europa. Amamos la ensaladilla y el pulpo, están espectaculares. Se recomienda reservar para almorzar y para un vermut casual, pasar después del almuerzo (de 4pm en adelante).

Here you have vermouth with… the delicious food of this place with the guarantee of Grupo Triciclo and The Hat Madrid, and views of the Casa de Campo lake which is, no more and no less, the largest urban park in Europe. We love the ensaladilla and the octopus, they are spectacular. Reservations are recommended for lunch and for a casual vermouth, stop by after lunch (4pm onwards).

5. Casa Camacho

Aquí se toma vermut con… ¡ginebra! Técnicamente este icónico cocktail se llama “yayo” y fue inventado en esa popular locación de Malasaña. Si tenéis suerte o llegáis temprano cuando no hay demasiada gente podéis preguntar por la historia de estos “yayos”.

Here you have vermouth with… gin! Technically this iconic cocktail is called “yayo” and was invented in this popular location in Malasaña. If you are lucky or arrive early when it’s not too crowded you can ask about the history of these “yayos”.

6. La Revuelta

Aquí se toma vermut con… ¡los mejores buñuelos de Bacalao de Madrid! En serio. Probablemente encontréis una pequeña cola en la entrada, os aseguramos dos cosas: la espera será corta y valdrá la pena. Realmente los buñuelos son espectaculares y el sitio no pretende ser “auténtico”, lo es. También hay croquetas y “barritas de energía”, preguntad por ellas 😉

Here you have vermouth with… the best cod fritters in Madrid! Seriously, for real. You will probably find a small queue at the entrance, we assure you two things: the wait will be short and it will be worth it. The fritters really are spectacular and the place is authentic, not one of those places that pretend to be but could be in NYC or Cape Town. There are also croquettes and “energy bars”, ask for them 😉

7. La Gildería

Aquí se toma vermut con… ¡gildas! Obviamente. Gildas variadas y ricas (podría vivir a base de gildas, a decir verdad), vermut de la casa (también disponible para llevar) y ambientazo para ser más específicos. Los perritos son bienvenidos.
